On Earth, Peace
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace (shalom) to men on whom His favor rests!” (Luke 2:14)
Jesus is born in Bethlehem. The miracle of all miracles has occurred. The Savior of the world, God in the flesh, is a baby in a feeding trough. It’s night. In the hills outside the city shepherds tend their flocks. Suddenly, the sky is aflame as singing angels appear to deliver a message.
They proclaim, “Peace on Earth!” but they’re not singing about the absence of war. As in the Middle East today, there were wars then. They weren’t singing about eased racial tensions, income equality, or political compromise. They were singing about Jesus, the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).
In the Jewish world, Peace is a four-strand cord. The root word, Shalom, means reconciliation. First, reconciliation with God - forgiveness, and restoration (Ephesians 1:7). Second, reconciliation with community - in Jewish culture, community is always more important than the individual. Third, personal reconciliation - only Peace re-connects us with our God-given purpose, and fourth, reconciliation with Creation - Peace defeats evil.
Watchmen are warriors, and yet, they understand Peace, perhaps more than most of the world. Why? Because although Watchmen warn the world and stand against the enemy, they serve the Prince of Peace.
Jesus, Emmanuel, Prince of Peace. We serve a troubled world, but our message is Peace … Shalom to the world!
