Each one of us has something special to offer to the world for the good of the Kingdom: a spiritual gift from the Holy Spirit. The Word tells us that God’s people all have unique spiritual gifts; special inclinations, talents, and skills to further the Kingdom, strengthen the church and benefit the world. It’s exciting and empowering to know that we have so much potential within us. But how do we identify these gifts?
Romans 12:6-8 reads, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”
Some believers may intuitively know what their gifting is, in the same way some know from an early age exactly what they want to be when they grow up. But what about those of us who aren’t so sure what our gift is? How do we identify and nurture it so that we can put it to use?
The best place to start is on our knees. Our spiritual gifts honor the Lord, and the work we do to discover these gifts honors Him as well. James 4:2 says, “…You do not have because you do not ask God,” so ask the Father to help you discern your strengths. Wait in faith that He will guide your heart and thoughts and help you uncover your potential.
As we pray, we can also actively test our strengths, the same way we take college courses to see what interests us before choosing a major. The same way we try different hobbies to see what sticks and what doesn’t. By testing ourselves, we can begin the process of discovery.
With trial often comes error, and the key to testing our strengths is to not become discouraged when we don’t succeed right away. Every dead end we hit brings us one step closer to finding out what our strengths are. Ask the Father to give you direction, give different gifts a try, and hold onto what is good. Don’t be afraid to try again and again and again. Each attempt brings us closer to knowing ourselves, and learning our weaknesses can help us discover our strengths!
So if you don’t wake up each morning automatically knowing where you spiritually excel, don’t lose heart. You’re not alone! Our gifts are constantly growing and changing as we do, and sometimes we have to dig a little before we uncover our own potential.
So dig. The world needs what you’ll discover.
