God’s chosen people – the promise to Abraham in Genesis 12:2 that of his seed God would build a great nation. Israel is the term used for both the nation and the Jews who live there. The nation, the people, the promise and the land of the Nation state. [see Nation of Israel, 12 Tribes of Israel]
