A Watchman’s Capacity
Capacity typically refers to what a container can hold, or how much mental aptitude a person has to perform a task, or the ability to carry the weight of a position or project at work. Can you handle it?
A Watchman’s Capacity is more than any of those, quite literally more. Watchmen handle more, comprehend more, outperform, out-think, and out-pace others who would try to do the same job and live up to the same calling. Are Watchmen superheroes? Hardly (Watchwomen, maybe), but they are operating under the authority of the Holy Spirit. They are connected to the supernatural power and influence of Almighty God.
Watchmen exercise divine insight, and guts. Guts? Guts. They deny fear any room in their spiritual walk.
Job said, “For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me.” (Job 3:25)
Fearing something does not guarantee it will occur, but when fear controls your thoughts, it eventually controls your actions.
The Capacity of a Limitless God
One definition of capacity is, “the maximum number or amount that can be contained.” Consider living that way as a Christian. What a way to live – life absolutely full blast for Jesus!
“So shall your barns be filled with plenty, and your presses shall burst out with new wine.” (Prov. 3:10)
“Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over…” (Luke 6:38)
“Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.” 2 Peter 1:2 (NIV)
God is an overflow God. He could have made dogs, cats, horses, and cows then stopped; but He didn’t. There are over 300 breeds of dogs and nearly 50 breeds of cats. Add horses (350+ breeds), cattle (over 800), and that’s a pretty cool barnyard. Then God added birds (nearly ten-thousand species). Stop there, and the world would have been amazingly diverse and beautiful. But God did not stop there.
According to a Reuters News article dated 2015, there are 228,450 known species in the ocean, and they estimate another two-million have not been identified. Scientists discovered nearly 1500 new ocean creatures, just in 2015; including a humpback dolphin, and a giant jellyfish. Over fifteen hundred creatures in one year! Watch the Discovery channel for a few days, and you’ll find that we continue to discover creatures and plants in places there should not be any – crustaceans that live near ocean fissures where the water temperature is boiling hot and the escaping gas is poisonous. Emperor Penguins breed and raise young where the temperatures reach -40 oF with winds of nearly 90 mph!
God is creative beyond our imagination. He has no capacity. God is extreme, extravagant, and lavish. He is the most excellent demonstration of abundance and limitless capacity. Technically, grammatically speaking, there is no way a thing could be limitless, and have capacity, so let’s say God is boundless. He has instilled that nature in us—we are made in His image.
Watchmen should be overflow-ers. We do not have God’s unlimited resources, but we can be people who are extravagant with our love, our giving, our mercy and our service to God and others.
Jesus fed 5,000 men, plus women and children. The entire crowd could have easily surpassed 15,000 people. When all of them were fed, there were baskets of food left over. Abundance. Under Joseph’s care, Egypt sustained an entire nation through seven years of famine with food to spare and sell. Archeologists discovered hidden catacombs in Egypt which still contain grain which has been preserved. When planted, the seeds grew and produced.
God has many names in the Bible representing His various attributes – God the Healer, Provider, Savior and more. If God had a middle name, I believe it would be Abundance.
Elastic Capacity Vs. Over Capacity
Capacity is currently a favorite term in the business world – a buzz-phrase. It’s used to describe someone’s potential to perform certain tasks, whether or not they have limitations that should be considered, their competence and knowledge. Are they up to the challenge? Can they handle the project? Do they have the capacity to succeed or to make their company successful?
Capacity is a valuable and laudable character trait. Capacity can be learned, but it’s not likely to be a class you take in college. Watchmen are people who have learned to stretch; mostly, they’ve allowed God to extend them. Jabez asked God to stretch his capacity. “Oh that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my border, and that Your hand might be with me, and that You would keep me from harm that it may not pain me!” And God granted him what he requested.”
This is not a physics lesson, but it may sound like one. When we are stretched our capacity increases. Our volume is expanded – we can contain more – God can deposit more knowledge, wisdom, and strength. The more we can hold, the more we have to give. God never meant for us to keep all that He gives us. Yes, God gives blessings just to bless us, but even then the testimony of God’s love and blessing is a gift for someone else.
Watchmen carry more, not to prove they can, but to build spiritual muscles. My spiritual strength moves me from a Watchman to a physical trainer Watchman. Now I help others grow stronger so they can bear up under a heavier load. Watchmen stretch their own capacity and that of others.
Those with physical disabilities amaze the world with their ingenuity. They find a way to do things no one believed possible. That is the kind of person you want on the wall – a man or woman of great(er) capacity. You want the one who does not allow darkness, or fear, or the uncertainty of the next breath to dissuade them from doing their job. You want a Watchman with impossible capacity.
It is possible to do more than you believe you can. You’ve heard those great movie lines, “You can be anything you want to be.” When the kid grows up, they go on TV and tell how their mom always said they could do anything they wanted. Now they’re CEO of some corporation they started in their basement using an X-Box.
Are there limitations in life? Of course, there are physical, mental, financial, geographical, and other hindrances. You have no control over where you were born, or to whom. You may have been born into a family of wealth, attended the best schools, spent time with influential people, and grew up to become successful and influential yourself. Or, you might have been born in Whittier Alaska, where nearly all of the 200 residents live in the same building. Needless to say, Whittier has fewer educational and career opportunities. Unless, of course, you pastor its one church, manage its one store, or clerk in its post office; all of which are conveniently located in the same building as the 200 people.
Capacity is not restricted by landmass, limited by population, stunted by education, or defined by opportunity. Capacity can be changed. Learn a language or a craft. Feed the homeless or the pigeons. Rebuild cars or rebuild lives. Whatever your capacity is now, it can be greater tomorrow.
Watchmen share God’s love, warn of impending global catastrophes, and study the truth of God’s Word. Since each of those is boundless and incomprehensible, an expanding capacity is one of the job requirements. It is also what will make your message, your love, and your impact exactly what God wants each of them to be.
Live large, or at least larger. Expand. Watch.
