6 Inches of Visibility

6 Inches of Visibility

6 Inches of Visibility

Sometimes life can feel like a passing fog. Sometimes our path isn’t clear, and we’re doing the best that we can to place one foot in front of the other. If only we had a sign from above, we would know if we should take that job, move to that new city, choose that church, buy that home or pursue a relationship with that person. In times like these, it is tempting to think back on the story of Gideon placing the fleece before God, asking for a sign before making a move:

“Gideon said to God, ‘If you will save Israel by my hand as you have promised— look, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said.’ And that is what happened. Gideon rose early the next day; he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the dew—a bowlful of water.” Judges 6:36-38

This story shows great compassion from our God, who allowed Himself to be tested. Sometimes we are blessed with clear signs from our Father directing our path, but most often we don’t have the fleece as proof in the morning. We don’t have a burning bush in our path (Exodus 3) or a talking donkey stopping us in our tracks (Numbers 22). So how can we make big life decisions when we’re not sure what the future holds?

It is hard to trust God when we don’t see signs. It is hard to have faith when our visibility is limited. Yet Jesus said those who trust without ever seeing Him or feeling the wounds in His hands are blessed: “Then Jesus told him, ‘You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.’" John 20:29

Is fear holding you back from making a move in your life? Wanting assurance is natural. It may even be natural to want to see the proof of His scars, yet the true blessing lies when we trust in His plan for us. Lift all things up to the Father in prayer. Spend time in the Word and ask for guidance. There is wisdom in waiting, but don’t remain stuck there. Take a pause, then ask yourself: have I spent too much time laying my fleece before God? Have I let day after day pass while I wait for a sign?

It may be time to make a move. Believe without a doubt that the Lord is working behind the scenes in your life, even if you don’t see the signs today. You may be working with 6 inches of visibility, but God may be waiting for you to move in faith. The blessings will follow.

Trust in His plan for your life. Seek Godly counsel. Keep moving and listening. One day the fog will burn off, and we’ll see the full blessing in the sunlight.

Lord, let that light find me running forward.
